TVR Chimaera Lights-on Buzzer

It's fairly common knowledge that Chimaeras are pretty good at draining a battery at the best of times. However leaving the lights on can really accelerate the process. It's for this reason that I decided to retro-fit a 'lights on' buzzer.

Parts

  • A 12v buzzer (Maplin: BZ55K)
  • A 12v relay (Maplin: FJ43W)
  • Some wire
  • Some cable connectors

I chose this buzzer because it's not too annoying (it's a 'beep' rather than a 'buzz'), at first it was too loud but I solved this by taping over the end.

Instructions

The way this works is that the circuit switched by the relay is generally on, I took a supply from the dashboard lights so that when they have power the buzzer will sound. The relay's coil is connected to the ignition so that when the ignition is on, the relay will switch and the buzzer will be isolated. So to clarify the logic is:

Lights Ignition Buzzer
Off Off Off
On On Off
Off On Off
On Off On

All of the sources of power required: ground, 'lights-on' and ignition can be found in the stereo loom so I spliced them here. This means you could fit the kit without removing the dash.

Ready to installation

Important: Note that the illumination supply to the stereo is turned off if you use the dash blacklight isolator (to the left of the steering wheel). As such the lights-on buzzer won't sound if you turn off the dask backlights.
